I open the passenger door of the truck and help Ginny inside then go around to the driverâs side.
âOuch! These leather seats are blistering hot,â she yelps when her tanned legs touch the seat. Quickly she pulls her bright yellow sundress down lower to cover as much of her legs as she can.
âYou can always sit in my lap,â I offer with a chuckle. I slap my thighs. âCome on. Thereâs plenty of room.â
âLike I did when you taught me how to drive in the pasture?â she asks. âWe were a little bit smaller then since we were only twelve. Both of us wonât fit behind the steering wheel now.â
âThatâs too bad,â I say, shaking my head in regret. âIn that case, slide on over here closer anyway. Thatâs my favorite thing about trucks. A big old bench seat without a stupid console in the middle to keep me from holding hands with my girl. Youâre too far away over there hanging onto the window pretending like youâre afraid of me. Donât worry. I donât bite. Get over here.â
Ginny gives me a shy smile and slowly slides closer. I drape my arm down on her left leg just like old times. âYou still fit,â I say, giving her leg a gentle squeeze.
âWhat do you mean?â she asks, giving me a curious glance.
âYour body always fit against mine as if you were made exactly for me. We were two parts of a whole. Even now, after all this time, when you lean against me, it seems as if itâs the only place you were ever meant to be.â
She leans her head against my shoulder with a contented sigh. I pull out of her driveway and onto the main road. âI know,â she says, snuggling closer under my arm. âHow is that possible after all this time?â
âSome things never die,â I tell her. âAll we did when we broke up years ago was hit the pause button. We never ended. Heck, I canât even tell you exactly what happened to us.â
âMaybe we needed time to grow up apart,â she says. âWe were always together and assumed we always would be. Maybe to mature into individuals, we needed to go our separate ways. You werenât meant to go off to college with me and I couldnât follow you to Nashville. It was inevitable our relationship would change at some point.â
âNo, I sure wasnât going to college.â I canât help chuckling at the thought. âAnd you sitting in smoky joints watching me sing wouldnât have been right either. Those were no kind of places for a lady.â
âIâm glad you came back to Sweet Rose Canyon, Luke.â
âMe too,â I say, reaching over to turn on the radio. âDo you still love country music?â
âIâll never get tired of it,â she says.
